Aczone Gel
August 19th, 2009
Aczone gel is the first new topical acne medication to be released in many years that actually is a different molecule. Other medications have either been different strengths of previously used medications or a combination of two existing medications.
Aczone gel is a topical version of the medication Dapsone. Dapsone is an oral antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication. It was used orally for acne in the past. However, Dapsone is known to have some potentially severe side effects. Although rare, these side effects most involved the blood cells and could lead to anemia or a decrease in production of all the blood cell lines, a condition known as agranulocytosis. These and other side effects limited the oral use of Dapsone for acne.
Aczone however has passed many rigorous studies and was shown to have no effect on the blood. As a result, it won FDA approval and does not require any blood test to monitor its use.
Aczone is used mostly for inflammatory acne consisting of more pimples and pustules and is applied topically twice a day. It may be used in addition to other topical and/or oral medications as well.
