Aczone gel is the first new topical acne medication to be released in many years that actually is a different molecule. Other medications have either been different strengths of previously used medications or a combination of two existing medications.
Aczone gel is a topical version of the medication Dapsone. Dapsone is an oral antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication. It was used orally for acne in the past. However, Dapsone is known to have some potentially severe side effects. Although rare, these side effects most involved the blood cells and could lead to anemia or a decrease in production of all the blood cell lines, a condition known as agranulocytosis. These and other side effects limited the oral use of Dapsone for acne.
Aczone however has passed many rigorous studies and was shown to have no effect on the blood. As a result, it won FDA approval and does not require any blood test to monitor its use.
Aczone is used mostly for inflammatory acne consisting of more pimples and pustules and is applied topically twice a day. It may be used in addition to other topical and/or oral medications as well.
Currently, you can receive an instant rebate by presenting a card to the pharmacist when filling you prescription. Learn more about the Aczone Gel rebate.

Epiduo gel is the newest combination medication to hit the prescription acne treatment world. Epiduo differs from the other combination therapies because it contains a retinoid. The combination is Differin 0.1% gel along with benzoyl peroxide 2.5%. The studies that won Epiduo FDA approval were very impressive showing improvement or clearance in the majority of the treated patients.
The combo uses the antibacterial activity of benzoyl peroxide and combines it with the anti-inflammatory and normalization of keratinization effects that are offered by the retinoid Differin.
Not only does it work well, Epiduo is quite reasonable as well. Prescription Perks.com indicates that there is an Epiduo Gel offer that will allow you to fill your prescription for no more than $20! Quite a bargain.

Acanya gel is the newest combination product for acne that contains both clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. The other combination products that have these two active ingredients are Duac gel and Benzaclin gel. So what’s the difference? Well, the more veteran combo products contain benzoyl peroxide in a 5% strength, while Acanya Gel contains only 2.5%.
So is less more? Well, studies have shown that benzoyl peroxide tends to do a good job regardless of the strength and that higher doses may contribute to a higher risk of irritation. So, with Acanya Gel, the idea is that you are still getting the advantages of a benzoyl peroxide withouth the irritation.
So if you have more easily irritated skin, consider speaking with your dermatologist about Acanya gel. You can even ask for a money saving card and look for other savings offers on Prescription Perks.com at their Acanya Gel offer page.
