This type of acne is relatively common and occurs mostly in women. It can be simply the continuation of acne that has existed during adolescence or may start after adolescence in up to one third of women. This type of acne is seen more commonly in people with "Type A" personalities and it is proposed that stress in these indivuals may increase androgen production leading to the formation of acne.

This type of acne in women tends to occur around the chin and jawline often times results in cyclic pre-menstrual flares.

Treatment for this type of acne includes both standard acne treatments as well as hormonal treatments including birth control and spironolactone.
